Fun in the Sun

Summertime...just the mention of the word can bring back memories. I remember as a child feeling like the summer stretched out in front of me and that I would never find enough things to do to fill the time. My dad used to make lists for us of things to do because he got tired of hearing us say we were bored. Reading, riding my bike and catching fireflies were some of my favorite summer activities. I was also thrilled each year to attend Youth Camp at the Westphalia Camp Ground. I did not enjoy the heat, the cold showers, the hard benches and the bugs. But, I loved the time with friends, singing in the choir, the powerful services, and the yellow light at the end of service that signaled that we could make our way to the snack stand.
As we get older, and the responsibilities of life crowd around us, we are not as free as we once were to enjoy the carefree days of summer. But, we can find ways to add some of the joys of summer to our daily lives. Visit the library or bookstore and find a new book to read. Take a few minutes before leaving for work and sit out on the deck and enjoy the beauty of God's creation. Plant a few flowers that you will see as you come and go from the house that will bring a smile to your face.
"A single sunbeam is enough to drive away many shadows."
- St. Francis of Assisi
